President's Message

Optimist Club of Chapel Hill President's Message

Message from the President, Trish Verne

Dedicated to serving the youth of our community, members of the Optimist Club of Chapel Hill are committed to enhancing the lives of children. We accomplish this through many different activities - - from taking kids bowling, to sponsoring essay and oratorical contests for high school students, to making meals at Ronald McDonald house, or assisting with the local parks and rec events at Halloween and Easter.

We have a special commitment to providing support to children undergoing treatment for cancer at Duke and UNC hospitals. Each year we raise thousands of dollars to help these children and their families during such a difficult time. The funds that we provide are used for phone cards, gas cards, parking, snacks and other incidentals. We are particularly proud of supporting other regional Optimist clubs in providing these same families with a fabulous trip to the beach each year. We also join with our parent organization, Optimist International, to fund childhood cancer research at Johns Hopkins University.

Please consider joining us in our ongoing efforts to give back to the community. We welcome you to attend a weekly meeting where we share fun, games, and dinner and usually are treated with a guest speaker from the community. We meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 6:30pm at Nantucket Cafe and Grill, Chapel Hill.

If you can’t join us at a meeting or make the commitment to becoming a club member, please consider becoming a “Friend of Optimists”. As a Friend of Optimists you support our club, are kept up-to-date on our activities and know that you are providing something extra to kids who need a little help.

For information about the Club, or about Friends of Optimists, please contact me by phone or email.
